Trigger Points: Paying Attention

Trigger points will not be ignored, you are their best tour guide, and our bodies aren't toddlers.

Receiving a massage from a therapist trained in trigger point therapy can be a phenomenal way to refocus your lens on your body. And only you hold the lens.

Your body is designed to grab your attention in the best kind of way. Trigger points are one way it does this.

Even if you’re not totally sure what a trigger point is, ultimately you are the most qualified person in the room to find them.

The sensation of a massage therapist’s hands pinpointing a trigger point is a visceral moment of awakening. Yowza! It will bring you to attention!

Like a child asking for your attention while you are trying to do five other things, the trigger point release serves as your priority adjuster.

Whatever wandering your mind is doing during your massage (grocery list making, work-family-world-problem-solving), the trigger point connection forces you to stop what you are doing and pay attention to what matters most in that moment:

You.

Most times your massage therapist’s magical hands will find all the spots without your guidance.

Just so you know, this isn’t magic. It’s smart hands and a good chart at work.

Sometimes the therapist might need your help to pinpoint the specific center of the trigger point.

Did you know you have the capacity and the permission to do this?

If I know I’m close but not quite on the center of a trigger point, all I have to do is ask: “Am I on it?”

I love when my client helps guide me to their trigger points. They say things like: you just passed over it, or move up about a half-inch, or just simply no, no…almost…yep!

When I ask, 100% of the time my client is able to respond accurately.

A yes is a clear yes.

A no is usually couched in a pause or a hesitant voice. (Just so you know, if your answer ends with a question mark, it’s ok to say no. You deserve confidence and clarity in your massage experience).

So when your body is asking you to look at it and listen to it while you are trying to do five other things, remember: our bodies aren’t toddlers. When it is seeking your attention, it actually is more important than whatever else is going on.

When you heed its call and turn toward it, you might be surprised at how well you already know it.
